![]() Hurricane Season is a linguistic blitzkrieg - Melchor is allergic to periods and wants to explore how far she can carry a sentence without using one. Was it fear? Did someone want to protect a secret? Was it for the money she was rumored to keep in her house? A series of characters relate their lives in search of answers, and the darkness within them is as bad as the murder the town wants to solve. Now everyone wants to know who killed her and why. A group of kids discovered her body near the irrigation canals, her face damaged and her neck sliced open. There used to be a witch in a small town in Mexico, but someone killed her. ![]() A mix of drugs, sex, mythology, small-town desperation, poverty, and superstition, this novel spreads like a fungus from the dark center of the literary space where crime fiction and horror meet. ![]() ![]() How?įernanda Melchor's Hurricane Season is so strange, wild, and foul-mouthed that I almost missed the sharp critiques embedded in the story. I also went into this one knowing what was going to happen to Ani. I know why she did it, and after a certain point, my having a harder time falling into the book, into the narrative due to the rapidly shifting scenes, didn’t matter. The particular style of this one is rapid, quick scenes, done with a specific purpose and intent from Christa, is a style that I, personally, have a hard time with. So this is less of a review, and more of my thoughts (or rambles?) about it.Īs a reader, I admittedly had a few problems with it (some of which have been fixed since I read it that first time). He believed that if you remove all outside influences, a system would settle into its natural state. These basic laws made him believe that everything happens for a reason and as a result, events are predictable in nature. For example, Newton stated that if an object is moving it will continue to move unless something stops it and that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The book described the basic principles of classical mechanics, which govern the activity of physical objects. Sir Isaac Newton wrote a book called the Principia Mathematica in 1687. However, the concept of causality has been challenged by a new force that scientists have had to consider. ![]() This assumption formed the bedrock for an age of enlightenment that changed how humans understand themselves and their world. Can we imagine that his divine mission was a mere invention of his own of whose falsehood he was conscious throughout? No, sorely, nothing but a consciousness of really righteous intentions could have carried Mohammed so steadily and constantly without ever flinching or wavering, without ever betraying himself to his most intimate connections and companions, from his first revelation to Khadijah to his last agony in the arms of Ayesha. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the advice Traynor gives to Clark, and to people in the audience who are like Clark.
